With the Engineering Curse: A Personal Journey
I remember flying from Port Harcourt to Abuja in 2021 to attend the COREN exam. It all started when I was about to register for some NUPRC permits, and they required COREN certification. At first, I avoided anything related to Engineering. Then, I applied for NIPEX, only to discover that even Project Management Technical Consultancy (PMTC), which I carry with my PMP certification, is classified as Engineering Support, including decommissioning and abandonment services. Imagine if I hadn’t completed the COREN exam in 2021 — it would have been much more expensive in 2024.
Since we converted to a limited liability company in November 2020, we haven’t made any significant revenue. The “Engineering Curse” is something many of us carry, even when we don’t have COREN yet. They know this, and they feel threatened, thinking we’re going to take over their companies by acquiring similar permits.
Well, it has come to pass sooner than they expected, especially since we owe no loyalty to those who treated our founder poorly. You may not know this, but for a long time, I stopped applying for jobs because I felt that many Nigerian Engineering companies would never hire me. In case they don’t tell you, the Engineering Curse is real. Many organizations prefer to hire many non-engineers with Engineering expertise for Engineering roles.
With our recent MOA (Memorandum of Agreement) with KAVIN Engineering and ExGas in 2024, we now need to secure all the necessary engineering permits to support our work with them. Without COREN certification, none of this would have been possible. The journey continues, and with the right permits in place, we’re now able to scale and deliver on new opportunities.
