The Reality of Project Planning: Not for the Incompetent

Dear Industry Colleagues and Partners,

To technical professionals (Well Engineers, etc.), I’ve observed two junior Well Engineers, both chemical engineering graduates from FUTO, promoted to Project Manager with the assumption that project planning is straightforward. (The complexities of the field go far beyond what they’ve encountered at SPDC or NLNG.)

I wish they’d experience the reality of project planning firsthand and understand how quickly the planner is held accountable for their shortcomings, while the company bears the financial losses. Without solid evidence to support your claims, asset owners won’t give you the respect or trust you expect.

With 18 years of experience in performance-driven roles, I’ve had to compete daily to sustain my career. While I’ve had a few colleagues who eased the journey, and I’m grateful for their support, I’ve also faced many challenges.

I’ve been terminated a few times. As a technical expert and engineer managing planning, claims, costs and finances, I’ve also seen situations where underqualified expats were brought in for us to train. It takes me no more than two hours to identify incompetence. If you’re here to take my position, I’ll provide the same conditions I encountered in Iraq — only PDFs, no native files.

If you can endure that, the “mafia manager” system and the Consigliere will elevate you to the role of Capo (respect is earned, not given because they pay you big salary). However, if you’re a political player without the necessary technical experience, I anticipate your failure — and frankly, I welcome it. Failure builds resilience, and only through resilience will you stop settling for less. Engaging in office politics won’t save you. Pursuing a PMP certification won’t transform you into an expert in project controls.
