The Nigerian Job Dilemma: High Expectations, Low Rewards

When I see jobs, especially local ones, I sometimes lack the motivation to apply. It’s exhausting that 70% of the available jobs aren’t even willing to offer a good salary. Even the two hours spent on interviews with some companies aren’t worth it, as you’re essentially giving them free lessons.
They want a PMP, MBA, and Engineering degree to exploit, yet they aren’t flexible enough to allow employees to plan for retirement by providing options like remote work or multiple job engagements. This is especially troubling when they can’t meet their needs with a salary of less than 500K NGN Monthly as that was about 50K NGN a decade ago considering an average of inflation and currency devaluation.
In some cases, your six-month salary can’t even buy you a new work tool or renew your credentials. Many of these companies aren’t ISO Certified, lack proper systems, and expect you to build these systems from scratch. Ironically, they’d rather pay foreign workers more money than Nigerians, just like my brother Dangote.
At some point, you’ll become too competent for Nigerian jobs with their unappreciative pay and career dead-ends, especially considering the galloping inflation rate. It’s a personal disrespect if you don’t set up a system to work for yourself or leave the country for greener pastures.
