The Inspiring Merit of the COO Role

--

Dear BIZVILLEPM Community,

Why do I love the COO position? One key reason is that COOs often reach their role through a combination of skill, experience, and merit.

Throughout my career, I’ve observed varying leadership styles from Managing Directors/CEOs and Senior Project Managers. However, the COO role (which I didn’t initially pay close attention to) stands out to me for its balance of strategic insight and operational expertise.

I aspire to build my career based on mentorship from those who consistently demonstrate these qualities. Since I’m not highly connected, I recognize the importance of focusing on a role where merit and leadership capabilities are highly valued.

For me, the COO role epitomizes the definition of merit (rather than connections).

It’s similar to playing the role of second-in-command to the Senior Project Manager, a position I’m familiar with as a Project Controls Manager, but this time, as the COO/Deputy MD/Project Director/Vice President reporting directly to the owners, MD, CEO, or President of the business.
