It’s interesting how the same salary that some people complain about is the same amount a “Mafia Manager,” who has been hustling to earn 50K NGN monthly in business, would be grateful for — despite holding an Engineering Degree, PMP, and MBA.
At some point, we must recognize that certain employers have saved us from a potential lifetime of financial hardship. Regardless of what happens afterward, that opportunity may have been the financial breakthrough your family never provided.
The truth is, earning 300K NGN monthly in 2015 was a substantial income, especially for someone who had to master both marketing and training just to earn 50K NGN in profit. That’s over six times what he/she earned.
In the Nigerian oil and gas sector, we sometimes overlook the financial realities faced by those in FMCG, Banking and Logistics etc (Only IT/Telecom Exempted). When people express frustrations about the economy, those in oil and gas should recognize their privilege. A graduate trainee’s salary in some oil companies exceeds what many COOs in FMCG earn.
No other sector in Nigeria can match that unless people relocate abroad (“Japa”). Many who do so often realize with regret that their colleagues who stayed back in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, are technically doing better than them in terms of ROI when they start spending more than 50% of income in accommodation but you had staff quarters as a trainee where you play table tennis and gym on weekend Lol.
