The Evolving Role of Senior Project Planner: A Journey with AI and Project Controls

--

The role of a Senior Project Planner is far more complex than it might appear on the surface. My own journey has been filled with twists and turns, moments of doubt, and periods of growth. At one point, I regretted leaving my training business in Lagos, questioning whether transitioning to the contractor side of project management was the right choice. These doubts pushed me to only explore roles like Senior Project Manager on the contractor side and Senior Planning/Cost Engineer on the client side. The Client Side is well-structured, while the Contractor Side is literally “hell,” and I avoid applying there unless I currently do not have an employment contract.

Ultimately, I gravitated toward contractor-side roles due to the limited opportunities in Port Harcourt for training-focused businesses. This pivot also introduced me to challenges I hadn’t anticipated. Initially, I held a negative view of Human Resources — an opinion that indirectly led to the Manpower Supply Permit. But over time, I learned to adapt and move past those perceptions. Despite my dedication, the workload in project controls (planning and cost) often felt overwhelming for only me and I often don’t join such organization with “one person department”. I recall one particularly difficult experience where I was unfairly let go and replaced by three individuals: a Planner and two Engineers to handle the takeoff. Moments like these forced me to rethink my approach and seek ways to optimize my performance and resilience.

Fast forward to 2024, AI emerged as a transformative tool in my career. For the first time, I truly enjoyed my role in project controls (planning and cost) working independently on the contractor side, largely thanks to how AI streamlined mundane tasks and enhanced my efficiency. AI allowed me to focus on strategic, higher-level priorities while significantly boosting my productivity. This technological leap has reshaped my perspective on what I can achieve. By 2025, I’m confident that I can step into a Chief Operating Officer (COO) role in a different organization. With the tools, knowledge, and experience I’ve gained, I feel more prepared than ever to lead at the highest levels.

As I reflect on my journey, I recognize how far I’ve come — and how much further I can go.
