Respect Labor: The Value of Prompt Payment and Dignity in Work
Dear BIVILLEPM Community,
I so much dislike being asked ‘How much is your money self?’ 🇳🇬, only few will understand; I won’t ever tell that to my fellow man/woman.
There’s a cultural oppression that takes place in my home country, Nigeria 🇳🇬, where someone will not pay a relatively poor person for his services, and they cannot do anything about it. The poor will now have to involve the police, and the police will charge him, and the rich might postpone the payment indefinitely by “settling” with the police while the poor are hurting.
A Nigerian senator (Senator Ike Ekweremadu) is an epitome of such cases. Though I’m not happy for his cooling his heels in a UK 🇬🇧 prison as my kinsmen from the Igbo Tribe in Nigeria whose child is hurting from kidney disease, but it sets a good example of what will happen when a wealthy person refuses to pay for services (especially promptly) in order to exploit or oppress the poor and defenseless.
At a point in my career, I grew up on the street dealing with oppressive customers, and the phrase ‘How much is your money self?’ was the most annoying phrase someone would tell me when they hadn’t paid for my services after I asked them. This explains why I don’t usually give credit deals unless there is a huge markup to account for the waiting time, but not to individuals, but companies.
That 70,000 NGN (70 USD) might seem small to you, but when a laborer asks for payment after delivering, resist the temptation to ask ‘How much is your money self?’ To you, it might be peanuts, but to your staff, it’s their entire monthly income. I try to resist the temptation of asking the same ‘How much is your money self?’ no matter how much someone pesters me.

Respect people, even if they annoyingly remind you that you haven’t paid yet, and pay promptly. There is dignity in labor, so be kind enough to respect that.
