Understanding estimated man-hours, standard man-hours, and the “k factor” is crucial for accurately forecasting project timelines and resource allocation in project planning.
Concept Breakdown:
1. Estimated Man-Hours:
- Total hours anticipated for task completion based on historical data, expert judgment, and project requirements, forming the foundation for project schedules and resource plans.
2. Standard Man-Hours:
- Predetermined time required for task completion under ideal conditions, serving as a benchmark for project execution efficiency and productivity.
3. K Factor:
- Accounts for factors affecting actual task completion time compared to standard man-hours, such as resource availability and environmental conditions.
Scheduling Process:
The entire scheduling process/activities are defined as Engineering Management Class (EMC), Construction Management Class (CMC)/sub-CMC, where the naming of activities, sub-activities, and sequencing is standardized, with each of them having standardized man-hours. This approach ensures consistency and accuracy in project planning. Both of us working in different locations (Say Milan, Italy Vs. Port Harcourt, Nigeria on behalf of SAIPEM) might produce the same first draft CPM Schedule with minimal differences for a particular scope if we have the same basis.
