Navigating the Depths of Expertise: Insights from the World of Project Management
Dear BIVILLEPM Community,
The first knowledge you acquire about a major discipline affects how you think about other knowledge within other disciplines. My first encounter with project management was through PMI’s PMBOK 3rd Edition in 2010, and since then, I have followed its updates closely.
When I learned about PRINCE2 for the first time, I was impressed, but I continued studying it alongside the PMI’s PMBOK Guide. So I think in the PMBOK guide, because that was my first knowledge.
My role at SAIPEM led me to question the standard so much that even after leaving, I realized there were gaps the book did not cover. The NLNG job was not the one that shattered my confidence in the guide; it was only then that I began to see its shortcomings more clearly.
I used to laugh at those who obtained PMP or PRINCE2 certifications and immediately labeled themselves as “project management experts” on LinkedIn. Becoming an expert is actually very challenging. Something significant must humble you when you do it for the first time and that is experience of failures.
When I say I’m an expert, you should know that I have waited for 15 years to use the word “expert” to qualify myself. In the past, when people called me that, I replied that I’m not. But now, I think I know enough to be called an “expert” in project management and project controls. I have made so many mistakes that have cost me two different roles. I’m actually an expert because of my flaws and failures, not because someone taught me.

When interviewing an expert, I would inquire about two major failures in their career and how they dealt with them. A genuine expert may still carry wounds from such failures and wish they had handled them better.
