Navigating Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) in EPC Project Management
Dear EPC, HSE, PMT & MGT Enthusiasts,
SIMOPS, or simultaneous operations, is a critical aspect of EPC project management that involves the coordination of multiple activities taking place at the same time. In order to ensure the safety and success of SIMOPS, there are several steps and documentation that must be followed.
Steps for SIMOPS in EPC project management:
- Identify all activities that will be taking place simultaneously
- Assess the risks associated with each activity and develop a risk management plan
- Develop a SIMOPS plan that outlines the procedures and protocols for each activity
- Communicate the SIMOPS plan to all stakeholders involved in the project
- Implement the SIMOPS plan and monitor the activities closely
- Continuously evaluate and update the SIMOPS plan as necessary
Documentation for SIMOPS in EPC project management:
- Risk management plan
- SIMOPS plan
- Communication plan
- Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for each activity
- Incident reporting and investigation procedures
Heads Up:
SIMOPS is a critical operation that should strictly be avoided. Construction scheduling aims to minimize Start-to-Start activity relationships in the same area due to safety concerns. Hence, the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) often includes grouping by area.
If SIMOPS is unavoidable in an EPC project, it is important to follow these steps and document the process thoroughly to ensure the safety and success of the project.
