Navigating Job Search Challenges as an EPC Manager (to a Junior Position): Recommendations

Dear Industry Colleagues and Partners,

You may encounter challenges as an EPC Manager applying for an Engineer (a junior) position. Three potential concerns are:
- Being “overqualified” due to extensive experience and certifications leads to concerns about reporting to a younger manager or process owner.
- The assumption is that you’ll easily find another job within six months and leave the role vacant again, which isn’t always true, as financial needs are a priority.
- There is a possibility that the company may not be able to match your worth based on industry pay standards.
My Recommendations:
1. Consider “going big or going home” and focus on management roles where only the best candidates are interviewed.
2. Emphasize your value as a candidate and address concerns about your expertise and knowledge, showcasing your potential as an ideal contractor or employee.
3. Increase your likeability and do more pro-bono mentorship to gain buy-in for the role. By mentoring others, you build relationships and a network of supporters who will advocate for you in times of need. Your generosity will come full circle, as some mentees will not abandon you when opportunities arise.
