Navigating Career Transitions: From Specialist to Generalist

Dear Industry Colleagues and Partners,

In a small organization, you learn to be a generalist, while in a larger organization, you become a specialist. At a certain point in your career, becoming a specialist is essential, and larger organizations are often better suited for this because they have established systems and processes. However, moving from a larger organization to a smaller one can be challenging, especially if you lack experience in smaller contractor organizations.

My advice is simple: if you decide to step down, make sure you go in as a manager so that you can lead your unit.

If you transition from a large company like SPDC or NLNG to a contractor company as an engineer or professional without leading a unit or owning the process, you may struggle. You could end up doing the work of three people for that seemingly big salary, and it will be tough if you’re not rugged. #Cazzo! LOL
