Project management in the Oil and Gas EPC sector is structured across four distinct levels, each requiring specialized expertise:
- Project Controls Managers focus on planning, scheduling, cost control, and performance monitoring.
- Regular Project Managers execute projects, coordinate teams, and ensure objectives are met without managing contracts.
- Contract Project Managers oversee projects and manage contracts, balancing technical, legal, and financial responsibilities.
- Executive Project Managers (COOs) align projects with corporate strategy, ensure profitability, and lead key decisions at the organizational level.
The term “PMO Leader” is not commonly used within EPC, though I’ve heard it a few times in non-construction domains. On the asset owner side or in other parts of the oil and gas value chain, such as exploration or production, PMO Leaders might exist but are not typical in the EPC sector.
Each project management level demands different skills:
- Project Controls Managers need technical expertise in tools like Primavera.
- Contract Project Managers should excel in contract negotiation and risk management.
- COOs must focus on strategic leadership and business acumen.
Recognizing your current role and building the necessary skills to progress is essential. Stop kidding yourself — no single degree or certification can prepare you for all levels. Real growth comes through continuous learning, experience, and targeted development.
