In secondary school, the physics textbook “Abbot” introduced me to Galileo’s fascinating story. Abbot doesn’t just present formulas; it weaves intriguing narratives before diving into physics concepts, a stark contrast to textbooks like P N Okeke that go straight to the point. This approach allows you to appreciate the human stories behind scientific advancements.
In the annals of science, Galileo Galilei stands as a luminary who reshaped our understanding of the cosmos. Contrary to common belief, he wasn’t killed for asserting the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Let’s unravel this misconception and honor his enduring legacy.
Galileo, born in 1564, pioneered modern observational astronomy, notably supporting Copernicus’s heliocentric model. While facing opposition from geocentric proponents, his 1632 work led to a trial by the Roman Catholic Inquisition in 1633.
Despite being found guilty of heresy, Galileo was not executed. Instead, he spent his later years under house arrest, continuing his scientific pursuits. His resilience in pursuing truth remains a beacon of inspiration.
It took over three centuries, but in 1992 (359 years after his trial), the Vatican officially acknowledged Galileo’s vindication, accepting the heliocentric model he championed.
